Thinking about a specific issue or problem you need to address but you think there might be multiple future possibilities?
If you are not sure what the future may hold, scenario planning is a powerful way of exploring a range of possible futures and testing your thinking and strategies in these possible future environments. Scenarios are particularly useful for dealing with high levels of uncertainty. We can help you develop scenarios to test specific business strategies or policies or to explore broader future opportunities and risks as part of your long term planning.
Scenario development can be as simple or as detailed as needed depending on the outcomes you are seeking.
Some of the key steps are:
- Identifying a focusing question for your problem or issue
- Identifying factors that influence the issue from the past, present and future
- Selecting the most uncertain or critical factors you need to understand better
- Creating plausible ‘what if’ stories (scenarios) around the critical factors
- Exploring what these mean in terms of the issue at hand
- Developing strategy that takes these possibilities into account
Recent client projects include:
Australian Veterinary Board Council and Veterinary Deans Council
The project was focused on looking at the future of veterinary education and regulation. To do that we created a number of scenarios that centred around veterinarians providing value in the future. We facilitated 4 volunteer teams to create future scenarios around factors such as pet owners getting access to diagnostic tools, corporatisation of veterinary practices, urban densification and its effects on pet ownership, internet based vet services and changes to animal farming. The project culminated in a 2 day workshop that examined the implications for education and regulation in the face of the scenarios. The output from this was then used to create a work plan for the next two years.
The project focused on looking at the future for community banking. A number of possible future scenarios of community banking models were developed to act as a framework for creating new possible business models
The cost of a scenario process will depend on the nature of what you wish to achieve. We will design a process that meets your specific needs.
