Twitter Follows The Hype Cycle

Mashable is reporting that Twitter has flatlined in terms of visitor growth.Putting aside whether the numbers are accurate what we are seeing in both new and old media is essentially a compressed version of the Gartner Hype Cycle which is used to look at technology adoption. I say compressed because the internet accelerates and compresses the process:
Twitter has been super hyped by the inclusion of stories involving Oprah, Ashton Kutcher, etc. We are now seeing stories where people are criticising Twitter for a whole range of reasons including that it is not a conversation medium, and that its system does not allow easy sorting of posts when you are following lots of people – completely ignoring the fact that there are a myriad of third party applications that do this sort of stuff. What this means is that we are past the peak of over inflated expectations which is a great thing. No-one is really sure where Twitter is going but the fact that there are so many third party applications and people trying to build businesses on top of its platform means it has a fighting chance.
